Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What basket configuration does Aquael recommend for a 40-gallon MULTIKANI 800 setup?
About 40 US gallons is roughly 151 L, which falls in Aquael's 121–160 L manual band for four baskets. The archived item 115089 table shows one base basket, so three additional baskets/media containers would need to be present or bought separately; the range is not a stock-load rating.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the MULTIKANI 800 work where the aquarium cabinet has no filter space?
The earlier English manual shows an arrangement with the pump on the aquarium wall and says the filter containers can be above the aquarium water level. It also describes other pump positions, including an external pump below the waterline that must be primed. Confirm safe support, exact tube routing and the configuration in the manual; this is not a claim that the current 1000 has the same placement options.

The 800 is the earlier item 115089 with a separate MK-800 pump, a one-litre base basket and up to eight expandable baskets. Current 1000 item 135128 is a separate 1.3 L chamber system with up to four chambers and a current manual requiring below-waterline placement. The old pump's layout flexibility must not be carried over.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the archive row prove an old unit is available and electrically compatible?
No. The Aquael archive page establishes the model identity and manufacturer data, not current seller stock, condition, exact box contents or a used unit's voltage/frequency. Check the nameplate, pump, seals and complete basket set on the specific offer.
Explore this need in the finder →Aquael's official US archive page still identifies a distinct MULTIKANI 800 external filter, item 115089. Its table prints 5–80 US gallons (20–320 L), 800 L/h maximum output, 210 US gal/h, 6.5 W, a 90 cm head, one 1 L basket and a 14 × 14 × 20 cm body. This is an earlier model, not the current MULTIKANI 1000 under a shortened name. Its defining feature is the separate MK-800 intake pump and expandable media containers, which allow installation layouts that Aquael does not document for the newer 1000.
The tank range depends on adding the right baskets
The old archive page describes use from 20 to 320 L, but the single base SKU is not an eight-basket package: its table reports one basket, and the English manual calls for a different total basket count as aquarium volume rises. The manual suggests one basket for 20–40 L, two for 41–80 L, three for 81–120 L, four for 121–160 L, five for 161–200 L, six for 201–240 L, seven for 241–280 L and eight for 281–320 L. Added containers and their media are separate accessories.
That distinction matters at everyday sizes. A 40 US gallon aquarium is roughly 151 L, which falls in Aquael's 121–160 L band and calls for four baskets; the item 115089 table shows one basket in the base configuration. The recommendation is not a fish-count guarantee, and it does not mean four baskets are included. The official archive page's 5–80 US gallon label is retained as the model family's documented range, but a buyer planning near the upper end should confirm the number and contents of the required add-on containers for the exact offer. The finder treats the printed US interval as a starting boundary, not as a promise that one basket can handle every tank in that interval.
Its pump placement is a real difference from Multikani 1000
The older English manual identifies the included pump as an MK-800. It describes three layouts: the pump mounted inside a standard aquarium to feed the filter, the pump outside below aquarium water level, or the pump installed inside a low-water setup. It says the filter containers may sit below, beside or above the aquarium water level. In the outside-pump arrangement, the manual says to prime the pump by drawing water through the intake before startup. The manual also warns that a particular illustrated pipe connection is for use inside the tank only; do not improvise an external pump mount from an internal-only drawing.
This creates a narrow but practical advantage for a room without a below-tank cabinet: if a safe supported pump arrangement and hose route fit the aquarium, the canister body itself need not be under the stand. It still needs stable support, a leak-conscious layout and access for wet service. This is not a hang-on filter and it does not attach to the rim in the way an HOB does. Most importantly, these placement options belong to the older 800 manual. The current MULTIKANI 1000 manual instead says its filter must be below water level; do not transfer the earlier layout flexibility to item 135128.
Read the printed capacity, pump and media figures separately
The archive table gives a 1 L basket and a separate 1 L bucket volume. They happen to share the same number in this model table, but neither is an installed-flow rating. The pump's 800 L/h / 210 US gal/h label is a maximum, not a measurement after hoses, media, height and outlet fittings. Aquael lists a 35 inch / 90 cm maximum head and 6.5 W. No checked US source gives an exact line-voltage or frequency label for a specific old unit; inspect the nameplate rather than assuming a power supply from a US gallon table.
The archive page describes a bypass shut-off arrangement for opening the filter while the pump is kept running, but service still needs careful handling. The manual says to rinse filter cartridges in drained aquarium water, disconnect power before cleaning the pump impeller, and tend the gasket when the pump operates outside the aquarium. It suggests cleaning after about two months at first, then when performance visibly falls; the manual recommends media replacement at least yearly, but monthly for Carbomax, Zeomax and Nitromax add-on baskets. These are maker's maintenance instructions, not a tested schedule. The separately listed pump prefilter sponge, item 101235, is not part of the package according to the manual.
What the archive image and page do not prove
Aquael's archived page is useful identity evidence for item 115089, but it cannot establish that a used or remaining retail unit is available, complete, undamaged or electrically suitable. The page image shows the Multikani 800 box, media container and pump; the artwork is an older reference image rather than a current seller's inventory photograph. Check exact model, the MK-800 pump, number and type of baskets, tubing, seals and mains label in the offer. The archive page does not give a UPC or current stock/price.
Aquael's current 1000 changes the model name and published design: its standard chamber is 1.3 L, it allows up to four chambers, its maximum pump-flow label is 1,000 L/h and its current manual requires below-waterline placement. Those differences make it a separate assessment, not an upgrade claim about noise, reliability or actual performance. No source checked here gives the 800 an explicit high-waste stocking rating; the aquarium range, pump output and module count do not supply one.
Who should still compare the earlier 800
The archived MULTIKANI 800 is relevant to a shopper who is open to an earlier model, needs an external filter body that can be positioned above or beside the tank, can safely use one of the manual's MK-800 pump arrangements, and is willing to verify the basket count required for the actual aquarium. It is a poor fit if the listing omits the pump, the unit's power label is incompatible, the installation depends on unsupported external plumbing, or the buyer expects the starter item to include every media container shown in the 20–320 L range.
Consider the earlier-generation finder switch as an invitation to compare documented models, not proof that a used unit can be bought in good condition. Match its 5–80 gallon manufacturer label to the exact size question, then confirm the basket setup, pump location and service plan from the manual. This is a research-based review of archived primary material, not a hands-on inspection or performance test.
