A useful fit for

The 50-size combines three cartridge/foam positions and the longer BioStyle body with a bundled heater in the rear-hung arrangement.

The main tradeoff

Separate HeatUp 50 data says 50 W and recommends it up to 15 US gallons while Thermo50 filter page says up to50; filter rating does not establish heater capacity. 2.7 L is filter volume; the tank label is maximum-only.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is Thermo 50 just the standard BioStyle 50?

No. Thermo SKU 84069 names standard BioStyle 50 Grey SKU 84066 plus HeatUp 50 SKU 33799. Its filter-side 50-gallon ceiling and three media positions are not heater-sizing instructions.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can the 50-gallon ceiling be used as a numeric range?

No. It is an upper-only label. No lower endpoint is stated for this exact US SKU, so numeric matching is withheld. The 2.7 L value is total filter volume, not basket capacity.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the bundled heater evidence establish heating up to 50 gallons?

Not from the checked evidence. The Thermo filter page gives a preset about 79°F, but its separately listed HeatUp 50 component is 50 W and marked up to 15 US gallons. Confirm bundle suitability with OASE before relying on it for the tank.

The larger Thermo package and its heater mismatch

OASE’s grey BioStyle Thermo 50 is US item 84069. Its exact page identifies a grey BioStyle 50 base, SKU 84066, plus a HeatUp 50 component, SKU 33799. The filter page lists an up-to-50-US-gallon / 180-L maximum, 5.5 W filter draw, 900 L/h flow label and 2.7 L total filter volume. It describes the integrated heater as preset around 79°F. These are manufacturer statements for the bundle, not an independent performance test.

The exact OASE pages also name Thermo 50 Navy SKU 84063 and Thermo 50 White SKU 84075. Both identify the same 50-size HOB package features: three multi-stage cartridges, three 30-ppi biological foams, a heater, telescopic intake and inlet strainer; their listed fields match the Grey model at 5.5 W, 900 L/h, 2.7 L total filter volume, a 50-US-gallon / 180-L maximum and the 154 × 304 × 212 mm body. The bundle pages identify HeatUp 50 SKU 33799, but a finish change does not resolve the separate-heater application question below. The White 84075 image and the separate page-associated Navy 84063 image are shown here; each depicts a filter body only, not the bundled heater. Confirm the exact color/SKU on the package or listing.

The stand-alone HeatUp 50 page creates an important application question: it identifies SKU 33799 as 50 W and recommends it for aquariums up to 15 US gallons, while the Thermo filter page gives the filtration package a 50-gallon ceiling. The checked pages do not explain whether that recommendation transfers unchanged to the integrated package or how it should be interpreted. Do not infer that the filter’s tank maximum means the heater is adequate at that size. If you want the Thermo 50 specifically to replace a separate heater, ask OASE to confirm the included heater’s use for your actual volume, room conditions and target temperature.

Three cartridge and foam positions

The 50-size filter includes three disposable multi-stage cartridges and three biological foams. The housing is longer than the 30-size and has a wider listed body; reserve space to remove it and clean the media. OASE describes the cartridges as containing mechanical foam, chemical media and fleece, with separate biological foams as part of the package. It calls 2.7 L the total filter volume. That is not a media basket measurement and does not satisfy the finder’s litre-basket requirement. The max-flow label likewise does not certify high-waste suitability.

Check the exact product SKU and package. Standard grey BioStyle 50 SKU 84066 has no included heater; Thermo SKU 84069 is a separate bundled configuration. The Thermo guide says the outlet stopper is non-Thermo only. Follow the manufacturer’s setup steps: rinse media without opening disposable cartridges, prime with water before powering up, and never run the pump dry. For Thermo models, establish filter flow before plugging in the heater and use a drip loop. The maker guide also says to remove carbon while medicating fish.

Measure the rear position before selecting size

This is a hang-on-back system, so it does not require a canister cabinet under the aquarium or an external hose route. It still needs a glass edge that fits the maker limits, an unobstructed lid, rear clearance and a water level within the stated setup range. OASE lists an intake that extends 6–14 inches, glass under one inch thick, and a maximum 5.5-inch difference from rim to water surface. A larger body can conflict with wall clearance or lighting, and the removable housing needs a path out for care.

There is no documented lower tank-volume endpoint, so the 50-gallon label does not become a confirmed exact-volume match. A biological filter also needs colonization and ongoing observation. Don’t read its chamber size or three media sets as proof that it can support a particular stocking level.

Compare to standard BioStyle 50 carefully

The standard grey BioStyle 50 review covers the non-heated package with the same general 50-size filtration layout. Thermo 50 trades separate heater placement for an integrated package, but the current primary-source heater recommendation deserves confirmation. If a separate heater already suits your setup, the standard 84066 may avoid the uncertain bundle role. If you want a combined unit, verify SKU 84069 and confirm the heater sizing directly before ordering; treat the filter’s upper label, total filter volume and heater suitability as three separate questions.

Start with your tank and installation constraints

Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
