Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the BioMaster 2 850 require a below-aquarium cabinet?
No. OASE's exact US manual says to install the unit next to or under the aquarium, so a below-tank canister location is not mandatory. A beside-tank placement still needs to respect the manual's maximum head, hose geometry, support and service-access directions.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard 850 include the concealed HeatUp heater?
No. The exact US product page describes HeatUp as a retrofit option, while the family lists the Thermo 850 separately. Verify standard SKU 94697 and do not count a heater unless it is included in the exact offer.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I treat 8 L as the model's basket capacity or its stocking rating?
No. OASE calls 8 L the total filter volume and separately lists 0.70 L for the pre-filter; neither is a documented media-basket volume or a high-waste/stocking rating. The maker's up-to-225-US-gallon label also does not supply an exact lower-to-upper fit interval.
Explore this need in the finder →Which 850 flow value should I use when comparing it?
The current US item page gives 400 gph / 1500 L/h, while OASE's exact US manual table gives 400 gph / 1550 L/h. Since the official sources disagree, this review does not choose a winning figure or imply either is an in-aquarium measurement.

What the standard 850 is—and what it is not
OASE's US page identifies the BioMaster 2 850 as SKU 94697 and calls it an external filter. The family distinguishes it from the Thermo 850, a separate heater-included configuration. For the standard 850, OASE describes a HeatUp heater as retrofittable, not supplied as part of the basic filter. That package difference is easy to lose in short seller titles: compare the model name and item number, then confirm the actual box before counting a heater, media, hoses or fittings.
The number “850” is also not a guarantee that any 850-litre aquarium is appropriate for every livestock plan. OASE's exact US product page lists a maximum of 225 US gallons / 850 litres; the official US manual separately labels 225 gallons / 850 litres “recommended for an aquarium volume of.” Neither wording gives a lower endpoint for a full operating interval, fish count, waste rating or measured circulation. A large-capacity label is a manufacturer screening value, not a substitute for matching species, stocking, flow tolerance and maintenance habits.
How the filter is organized
The manufacturer describes water passing through a removable EasyClean pre-filter before the main media stages, which include Hel-X biological media and filter sponges. The filter also has a priming or vent control and automatic shutoff/safety locks around maintenance. OASE says the pre-filter module can be removed separately, so coarse material can be serviced without taking the entire canister apart. Those are design features that may make a split service routine more manageable; they do not establish how often a particular tank will need cleaning or how much biological load the system can safely handle.
Specifications distinguish the 8-litre “filter volume” from the 0.70-litre pre-filter volume. Neither field is labelled media-basket volume. It would be misleading to put 8 litres into a basket-size comparison or to infer that every part of that total can be filled with an arbitrary medium. If capacity for custom media is a deciding requirement, ask OASE for an explicit basket figure for SKU 94697. The current fact record leaves the comparable media-basket field unknown.
Installation without a dedicated cabinet
A significant update from the earlier review of the family is that the exact US instruction manual is now available from OASE's Downloads library. It applies to the US 850 item numbers and gives a US/Canada/Mexico table with 120 V / 60 Hz electrical data. More importantly for location, the manual says to install the unit next to or under the aquarium and to note its maximum head height. The filter therefore does not require a below-aquarium cabinet by definition. A beside-tank position still has to satisfy the actual hose path, water-level geometry, support and service access in the manual; “not below” is not the same as “fits anywhere.”
The listed housing is 9.4 × 9.4 × 22 inches, a tall, narrow footprint that merits a tape-measure check. Leave enough room not just for the body but to lift the handle and withdraw the pre-filter module. The exact manual's maximum-head line is 7.4 feet, while the US product page pairs that with 2.25 metres and the manual with 2.2 metres. The difference appears small, but a location-specific installation decision should use the current document supplied for the exact item rather than treating a rounded figure as a guaranteed clearance.
Electrical and performance fields need care
OASE lists 25 watts at 120 V / 60 Hz for the standard 850. Its current product page reports maximum flow as 400 gallons per hour / 1,500 litres per hour; the exact US manual table reports 400 gallons per hour / 1,550 litres per hour. The paired values do not agree, so this assessment selects neither as a settled flow number and does not calculate turnover from it. A maximum flow figure also should not be presented as independent in-aquarium circulation under a particular hose, media and installation arrangement.
That restraint does not make the product impossible to compare. SKU 94697 is a distinct standard 850 with a removable pre-filter, a stated total filter volume, a long listed body and no included heater. Those documented package and setup differences can be checked directly against a need. What is missing is a stable route-verified flow/head specification and any manufacturer-specific high-waste rating. If either affects your decision, request a current technical answer from OASE rather than selecting whichever page number looks favorable.
Service and package checks
Before ordering, verify standard US SKU 94697—not Thermo 850 SKU 94677, an international electrical edition, or a seller-assembled bundle. Compare the manufacturer's listed kit contents with the offer, including filter media and pipework, then check the correct 120 V / 60 Hz label. Read the matching US manual for initial priming, adjustment, pre-filter removal, shutoff handling and media cleaning. The manual provides staged care procedures; the product page does not promise an aquarium-independent cleaning interval.
For a cabinet or adjacent installation, measure door openings, base support and clearances for lifting the top assembly. A narrow stand can have enough floor footprint but still prevent the pre-filter from sliding out or make valves unreachable. Confirm that the return and intake can follow the manual's maximum-head and hose guidance without sharp bends or unsafe tension. These are layout checks, not evidence that the filter has been installed or tested in this review.
Bottom line
The BioMaster 2 850 standard is the largest current standard model in this observed OASE family. It has a 225-gallon maximum label, an 8-litre filter-volume field, 0.70 litres of pre-filter volume, a 25-watt US electrical rating and documented beside-or-under placement. Its standard package keeps heater choice separate from Thermo 850. Those differences help identify what the model offers, but they do not settle a precise aquarium-size range, media basket capacity or heavy-waste suitability.
The most useful buying questions are exact: Is the offer standard SKU 94697? Is a heater required? Can the actual stand meet the US manual's head, hose and access instructions? Does a current OASE technical sheet settle the differing flow pair? If those checks are satisfied for your aquarium and care routine, the 850 can remain a candidate; its name and maximum volume alone should not decide the system.
