A useful fit for

Assess U3 for a 24–40-gallon internal-filter plan when its 10.5-inch body and 6-W US rating suit the aquarium and access.

The main tradeoff

Pump output is not an installed flow measurement; one product-page feature bullet has an inconsistent litre value that should not be mistaken for the model-table value.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

How does the U3 differ from U2 and U4?

Its A475 row lists 155 US GPH, 6 W at 120 V / 60 Hz, a 10.5×3.25×4-inch body and a 24–40-gallon manual interval. U2 is smaller/lower-output; U4 is larger/higher-output. These are distinct capacities, not interchangeable names.

Which U3 litre value is supported?

The current title/table say 40 US gallons / 150 L, and the A475 manual gives 24–40 gallons / 90–150 L. One extracted feature bullet says 110 L; this isolated mismatch is retained in the dossier, not used as the correct paired value.

Does U3 need under-tank cabinet space?

No; it is a submerged internal filter. Check the real interior footprint, water depth, lid and bracket clearance, and whether you can tilt/remove the 10.5-inch body for service.

The U3 is the middle capacity option within Fluval’s current four-model U-Series internal-filter family, with an identity of item A475 and UPC 015561104753 in the US catalog. It is not merely a larger U2 package: it has its own size interval, output figure, electrical draw and body dimensions. Its value depends on whether an internal device can sit comfortably inside the aquarium and whether the U3’s specific rated range fits the plan.

U3’s own range and the page inconsistency

The A465–A480 manual gives the U3 a 24–40 US gallon / 90–150 L aquarium interval. The current US product title and model table state up to 40 gallons / 150 L. One extracted feature bullet on the individual page pairs 40 gallons with 110 L, which conflicts with both the heading/table and the family manual. The evidence record preserves the discrepancy; this assessment uses the consistent U3 table and manual values, not the stray bullet.

The lower and upper boundaries let a shopper compare a specific volume with the maker’s interval, but they do not say how many fish the aquarium can support. Feeding, species, waste and water-care needs remain separate. No reviewed Fluval source provides a U3-specific high-bioload rating. A strict volume match is therefore only a screened candidate, not a biologically complete recommendation.

Body, power and outlet choices

Fluval lists 155 US GPH / 600 LPH pump output, 6 W at 120 V / 60 Hz and dimensions of about 10.5 × 3.25 × 4 inches. The model is nearly three inches longer than the U2 in the manufacturer table and has a higher pump-output figure. The sources do not provide a separate U3 filter-circulation number. Do not treat 155 GPH as a measured in-tank circulation result or compute a guaranteed turnover for your aquarium from it.

The U3 follows the U-Series design: it can be mounted vertically or horizontally and offers a top outlet, integrated middle spray bar and bottom outlet. These are selectable routes. Fluval associates the top outlet with circulation and oxygenation, the spray bar with a more even gentle output and the bottom outlet with deep-water agitation. Their labels describe what the feature is intended to do, not a tested outcome in your particular aquascape. The venturi valve works only on the top outlet according to Fluval support, so choose based on the arrangement you want rather than expecting air injection from every port.

As an internal filter, U3 avoids a separate canister, hoses and below-tank installation constraints. It occupies interior space, however. Compare the 10.5-inch length with the actual clear wall, water depth, heater, plants and lid. The bracket and the area needed to remove or tilt the filter for care are part of the required footprint. The manual describes horizontal use for shallow or low-water layouts, but the exact fill level and mounting should follow its instructions.

Media and upkeep

The U-Series model material lists two foam pads and two Poly/Carbon cartridges for U3, with BIOMAX biological media; the family chart assigns 40 g of BIOMAX to U2 and U3. That is more media stages than the shared chart lists for U1. Fluval’s media descriptions distinguish mechanical capture from the polyester/carbon cartridge and the biological surface of BIOMAX. These roles can inform a maintenance plan, but they do not specify how long the U3 can run before service in a particular aquarium.

The flip-top design is intended to make access easier. Fluval’s manual and support guidance still call for cleaning the motor/impeller and media, and the manual warns not to wash beneficial media in untreated tap water or replace all media at once. Keep a maintenance path in the layout and check the exact A475 box: online product descriptions and retailer bundles can vary. Replacement media should match the model, not only the brand name or approximate size.

When U3 is a reasonable comparison

Compare U3 when the tank falls within the documented 24–40 gallon interval, you want an internal design, and the body can be installed and removed without disrupting the aquarium. At 32 gallons it sits in its stated range. Near 35–40 gallons, U4 also overlaps; the useful comparison then includes the longer U4 body, higher 12-W draw and different amount of BIOMAX rather than just selecting the upper model number.

If the aquarium is beyond U3’s maker ceiling, a larger U-series model does not automatically become appropriate; it has a separate 34–65-gallon range and bigger footprint. If the aquarium is below U3’s lower boundary, this review does not endorse it merely because its upper limit exceeds the tank volume. For high-waste or species-specific use, seek husbandry guidance beyond these capacity labels.

Bottom line

U3 is a distinctly larger internal filter than U2, with a 24–40 gallon manual range, 155 GPH pump output, 6 W draw and a 10.5-inch-long body. Its mount orientation and outlet options create flexibility, while the interior-space and cleaning path remain practical constraints. The isolated 110-L feature-bullet error is important to retain when checking sources; do not let an inconsistent value stand in for the U3’s other repeated 150-L entry. This is an evidence-based assessment of Fluval information, not a report of a hands-on setup, measured flow or fish trial.
