Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What aquarium interval does the U2 manual give?
The A470 row is 12–30 US gallons / 45–110 L. The current retail title emphasizes the upper limit, but the shared model manual gives the lower boundary. It is nominal volume guidance, not a stocking-density rating.
Explore this need in the finder →What does its 105-GPH number mean?
Fluval calls 105 US GPH / 400 LPH pump output. The reviewed U-Series comparison does not give a separate filter-circulation figure for this model, so this is not a measured rate through a filled aquarium and installed media.
Explore this need in the finder →What media does the manufacturer list with U2?
The family material lists two foam pads, two Poly/Carbon cartridges and BIOMAX; it lists 40 g for U2/U3. Check the exact box, particularly older stock and bundles.
Explore this need in the finder →Fluval’s U2 is a submerged internal filter sized between the compact U1 and the longer U3/U4. The US product record identifies it as item A470, UPC 015561104708. Its main practical appeal is a conventional wall-mounted filter body with several outlet arrangements, avoiding the separate canister and hose path of an external model. That does not make it a universal answer for every tank that falls under its gallon ceiling.
A real interval, with limits
The shared A465–A480 model manual lists the U2 for 12–30 US gallons / 45–110 L, while the current US retail title emphasizes “up to 30.” The lower bound is useful because it lets the finder test an entered volume against both ends of the documented interval. It is still nominal manufacturer guidance: the sources do not convert it into a fish-count rule, waste-load rating or guarantee for a particular species.
At 20 gallons, the U2 is within that printed interval. Around the boundaries, it overlaps with neighboring models rather than defining a single correct selection: the family manual’s ranges for U1, U3 and U4 differ. Look at the actual tank, livestock, flow preferences and service routine instead of assuming that a larger model number is necessarily better.
Output and installation
Fluval lists 105 US GPH / 400 LPH pump output, 5 W at 120 V / 60 Hz and a body roughly 8 × 3.5 × 4 inches. The U1 shares the listed 5 W draw but has a smaller body and lower pump output. The U2’s dimensions matter because it is inside the aquarium: check whether the intended wall is clear of a heater, plants, decor, lid braces and an area where fish rest. Plan enough room to tilt the filter off its bracket for service.
The U Series supports horizontal or vertical positioning and has three output options: a top outlet for circulation and oxygenation, a middle integrated spray bar for a gentler even flow, and a bottom outlet for deeper-water agitation. The U2 is adjustable, but those routes are alternative settings rather than three flows operating together. Fluval’s support material says the venturi air valve only works at the top outlet; if you choose the spray bar or bottom route, do not expect that air feature there. The advertised pump output is not a measured circulation rate through a stocked aquarium, and the U-Series table gives no separate circulation figure for the U2.
Media beyond the U1
The family information lists two foam pads, two Poly/Carbon cartridges and BIOMAX biological media for U2, U3 and U4. It assigns 40 g of BIOMAX to the U2 and U3. That is a different supplied-media profile from the family chart’s U1 entry, which lists foam only. The Poly/Carbon cartridge combines a polyester side and a carbon side according to Fluval’s replacement-media description; carbon is a media choice, not a substitute for checking water quality or the aquarium’s maintenance plan.
Fluval describes the flip-top lid as a way to access media without removing the whole unit from its bracket. The manual’s maintenance advice still involves periodic cleaning of media and the impeller, and it cautions against cleaning beneficial media in tap water or replacing all media at once. Treat included media as a starting package, verify the actual A470 box, and use the current manufacturer instructions for maintenance intervals. Do not infer a low-service routine just because the unit is small.
Who should compare it—and who should look elsewhere
The U2 makes sense to compare when you want an internal filter, the 12–30 gallon manual interval is relevant, and an 8-inch housing will not interfere with the aquascape. It also avoids below-tank space. If the aquarium is much smaller than the lower bound, substantially larger than the upper bound, or has unusual waste production, the maker’s printed range alone does not settle the question. If the available interior wall cannot fit the body or allow cleaning access, the installation form is wrong even when gallons match.
For a smaller claimed volume, the Nano and U1 are separate product identities, each with its own media and unknown lower bound. For a larger internal configuration, compare U3 and U4 by their manufacturer-listed interval, body length and draw. A canister or hang-on design may suit a different room layout, but it brings distinct placement rules that should be assessed from its exact manual.
Bottom line
The A470 is a clearly identified U-Series step-up from U1: wider documented volume interval, higher listed pump output, a larger body and chemical plus biological media in the family package description. Its advantage is not a claim that it will filter a particular stocked tank better in practice; no independent flow or livestock testing was conducted. Confirm the US item and media contents, measure the inside installation and use the manufacturer’s interval as one boundary among several. The assessment is based on Fluval’s model, family, manual and support information rather than firsthand use.

Start with your tank and installation constraints
Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
