Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Which 07 size includes a 45 US gallon tank without asking for the larger 407?
Both the 207 (20–45 gallons) and 307 (40–70 gallons) include 45 gallons in their published intervals. The 307 has a 3.1 L basket versus the 207's 1.8 L, but capacity alone cannot select a high-load setup.
Explore this need in the finder →How much larger is the 307's media capacity than its chamber?
Fluval reports 3.1 L basket volume, 4.5 L total chamber volume and 7.3 L overall canister volume. Only the first is the listed basket figure used for a media-volume comparison.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it run in a stand that allows only 4 ft from canister base to water level?
Yes with respect to the manufacturer's stated 5.75 ft maximum water-column height, provided the filter remains below the aquarium and the other setup requirements are followed. The actual stand layout still needs measurement.
Explore this need in the finder →What does Fluval's paired '40–70 US Gal / 90–330 L' label mean?
The US product page prints both figures, but the gallon and liter ranges are not direct conversions. For a US volume choice this assessment uses the stated 40–70 US gallon interval and flags the printed metric range for exact-model verification.

A larger basket for tanks at the 07 family's overlap points
The Fluval 307 is the 07 Series model listed for 40–70 US gallons, with item code A446. It sits between the 207 and 407, but its interval overlaps both: a 40–45 gallon aquarium also falls within the 207 range, while 50–70 gallons also falls inside the 407 range. These are overlapping manufacturer brackets, not a direction to buy the larger of two models or a standard stocking formula. They do make the 307's more specific differences useful when narrowing a shortlist.
The 307 has 3.1 litres of media-basket volume, compared with 1.8 litres in the 207 and 4.2 litres in the 407. Its vertical pre-filter area is 803 cm², the same listed area as the 207, while its total chamber and canister volumes increase to 4.5 and 7.3 litres. Keep those measurements distinct: the basket is the usable media-basket figure, not the full canister volume. No manufacturer rating reviewed here says how many fish, what feeding rate or what waste load the 307 will support.
Flow numbers need a qualifier
Fluval prints 303 GPH for pump output and 206 GPH for filter circulation. The manual's specification table identifies the latter separately and says circulation was measured with intake and output hoses of equal length. Neither number describes a measured flow in an individual aquarium after installation. Media selection, hose length and aquarium layout can change the real result, and the manufacturer's table should not be turned into a guaranteed turnover rate.
The 16-watt listed draw is higher than the 207's 10 watts and lower than the 407's 23 watts. The 307 body is 9.5 × 7 × 16.5 inches, noticeably wider than the 207's 7.5 × 7-inch footprint but not as tall as the 407's 19.3-inch height. Fluval lists a 5.75-foot maximum water-column height, compared with 4.75 feet on the 107 and 207. These dimensions and distances matter inside a cabinet, particularly where the canister must stand clear of walls and remain removable for service.
One source detail needs careful handling: the US page pairs 40–70 gallons with 90–330 litres. Those are not direct conversions. This assessment preserves the manufacturer's paired wording in its fact record but uses the US-gallon interval for US questionnaire matching. If a tank is measured in litres or an online offer shows a different regional specification, verify the exact SKU and edition rather than silently converting or importing a non-US model's label.
Installation can rule it out before media capacity does
The 07 manual describes a gravity-fed arrangement: the canister must remain vertically below the aquarium, and its base must not exceed the model's water-column limit below the maximum water level. The 307's 5.75-foot limit is not permission to mount it above the tank. Fluval also calls for straight hose runs without loops and little slack, and limits how far the aquarium surface may sit below the rim. Measure from the canister's planned base to the actual waterline, verify door and plumbing clearance, and make sure the intake is not beside an air stone or other air source.
During setup, the manual says to leave the filter unplugged until the canister is filled and primed. It asks users to rinse the supplied media and retain the suggested basket levels for the basic setup. A larger 307 therefore requires more than room for the housing: allow space to remove baskets, handle wet media and reach the valves. If that space is marginal, a filter that fits its gallon label can still be the wrong physical arrangement.
Service routine and flow adjustment
The included media and separable vertical pre-filter are intended to make the initial stack and some service tasks accessible. The center handle lifts the basket stack; the pre-filter can be reached independently. Still, routine care includes more than rinsing foam. Fluval's manual has recurring component tasks for the impeller, intake, hose, gaskets, primer, biological media and chemical media, with a schedule extending from monthly checks to annual maintenance. It also says not to replace all media at once. Follow the exact supplied manual and avoid assuming that a larger basket means less frequent upkeep.
The AquaStop output control is described by Fluval as safely reducing output by up to 50 percent. That is useful for modestly tuning the outlet, but it does not establish the right current for delicate livestock in a particular tank. The available evidence is not a flow test at different valve settings; watch the inhabitants and consult appropriate husbandry guidance rather than treating the control's full range as a universal prescription.
Verdict
The 307 deserves consideration when an aquarium falls within 40–70 US gallons and its stand can accommodate the wider canister, below-water installation and service access. Its 3.1-litre basket is the standout numerical step from the 207; its tradeoffs include a larger floor footprint, taller body than the smaller models and a 16-watt specification. At 40–45 gallons, compare it with the 207; at 50–70, compare it with the 407. Without an exact livestock load, the larger number cannot decide the purchase. Check the US model identity, physical measurements, hose path, basket needs and maintenance tolerance before choosing.
