Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the Extra Small be certified for a 5-gallon aquarium by the volume finder?
Not from the reviewed evidence. Its current page/package says 0–5G, but the 2025 catalog describes it only as up to 5 gallons; the zero is not treated as a useful minimum aquarium volume, so the numeric matcher leaves the lower endpoint unknown.
Explore this need in the finder →Does this internal model require a cabinet under the aquarium?
No. It is mounted inside the tank with a clip on a framed aquarium or suction cups on frameless glass. Verify pane thickness and interior clearance; the location choice does not prove the unit will fit every tank wall.
Explore this need in the finder →How should the cartridge holder be maintained?
Use the Extra Small EcoRenew refill, change it at about four weeks and before its fibers decompose, retain the Bio-Holster and rinse that holder in aquarium water rather than tap water or cleanser. The reviewed sources give no comparable basket-litre value.
Explore this need in the finder →Does a 35-GPH label establish high-waste suitability?
No. The page/manual flow label is not an independent installed-flow measurement or a manufacturer high-waste rating. The explicit high-waste field remains unknown for this exact model.
Explore this need in the finder →Evidence basis: this is a document-based assessment of Aqueon’s current US SmartClean Internal family page, its linked instructions and the 2025 Aqueon catalog. No filter was installed, owned, tested or measured for this review.
A tiny internal model with a cautious volume boundary
Aqueon’s current selector identifies the Extra Small SmartClean Internal Filter as item 100549861, UPC 015905002479. Its package is marked 0–5 gallons and the selected product-page text also says “0–5G,” while Aqueon’s 2025 catalog describes the same SKU as “up to 5 gallons.” The current page and catalog agree on the ceiling but do not establish a practical minimum aquarium volume. Because “zero gallons” is not a useful operating lower bound, this assessment keeps the minimum unknown rather than treating the printed zero as a verified usable tank size. The numeric finder therefore does not certify the Extra Small at an entered volume, even though the family page includes it in the internal-filter pool. This is a conservative evidence rule, not a statement that the unit cannot physically run in a small tank.
The catalog distinguishes the retail carton (4.375 × 3.25 × 6.375 inches) from the filter item (3 × 3 × 6 inches). That compact body is the product’s central advantage when an external canister cabinet is impractical, but the unit still occupies visible aquarium space. Allow room for the top cover, the adjustable outlet, the water-change spout and removal of the housing for service. A small footprint should not be confused with an invisible or maintenance-free installation.
One cartridge, a reusable holster and a built-in water-change spout
The current product page describes a self-priming auto-start pump that restarts after power is restored, an adjustable flow control and an EcoRenew cartridge made from sustainable fibers infused with carbon. A Bio-Holster behind the cartridge provides a separate place for biological media to grow; the cartridge and holster have a NoDrip design intended to reduce mess during changes. The page says to use the Extra Small replacement cartridge and gives an upper flow label of 35 GPH. The linked manual’s size table likewise lists up to 35 GPH for item 100549861. These are maker-published values, not an independent measurement of flow inside an aquarium, and the label does not establish fish load or a high-waste rating.
SmartClean adds a useful but specific task: the manual shows the discharge spout being turned and extended over a container so aquarium water can be directed into it during a change. You still need a reachable container, enough working space around the unit and a safe route for the removed water. This is not an automatic water-change system. Aqueon’s instructions advise removing only a portion rather than emptying the aquarium, then replacing the water with newly cleaned, conditioned water.
Choose the mounting that matches the glass and rim
The manufacturer says the internal unit can hang from clips on framed aquariums or attach with suction cups to frameless glass. Neither option needs a below-tank canister location, so this model remains relevant when cabinet space is unavailable. Still, the internal mount is not universally interchangeable: Aqueon says the clip or suction-cup choice depends on aquarium thickness. Check the supplied clip, tank-wall thickness and glass surface before assuming the bracket will hold. The product page lists use in fresh- or saltwater aquariums, but that broad medium label does not replace species-specific flow or livestock planning.
For cartridge service, the manual says to remove the biological holster, tip it so excess water drains back to the filter and take out the used cartridge. Replace the EcoRenew cartridge at about four weeks and before its sustainable fibers begin to decompose. Do not throw away the holster; rinse it in water taken from the aquarium, not tap water or cleanser. The impeller and pump are accessible for cleaning, but the manual gives a procedure rather than a fixed interval. The unit is not presented as a user-repairable appliance.
What this size does not tell you
Aqueon publishes no comparable media-basket litre volume for the XS Bio-Holster, nor an explicit high-waste suitability statement. A cartridge size and a 35-GPH maximum cannot be converted into those missing values. If a measured media volume or documented load rating is essential, the finder correctly excludes the XS when that requirement is selected. For a type-only search, it remains one of the reviewed internal models; compare its exact package, the compact item dimensions and the separate setup space required for the clip or suction cups. The page and instructions both list a one-year warranty, but a used filter should not be assumed to retain new-product coverage.
Before purchase, check for current item 100549861 and the Extra Small 0–5G package rather than relying on a generic SmartClean family image or on the image filename, which still contains an older internal media code. The 2025 catalog’s “up to 5 gallons” wording is why this assessment does not treat zero as a verified numeric minimum.

Start with your tank and installation constraints
Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
