A useful fit for

A 5–15 gallon interval-confirmed internal option when the aquarium has room for the 4.25 × 3.5 × 6.25-inch body and an appropriate clip or suction-cup mount; it requires no below-tank canister position.

The main tradeoff

The Small's 35–75 GPH label is not an installed-flow or livestock-load guarantee. Its Bio-Holster has no published comparable litre volume, and cartridge changes and occasional pump/impeller cleaning remain part of ownership.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is a 10-gallon aquarium inside the Small's manufacturer-stated range?

Yes. Aqueon's current page and 2025 catalog both give the Small a 5–15 US-gallon interval, so 10 is within the closed published range. This does not certify a stocking or high-waste plan.

Can I use it when no cabinet space is available?

Yes, its supported setup is inside the aquarium and does not require a below-tank canister spot. Choose the clip for a compatible framed tank or suction cups for frameless glass based on the aquarium thickness; measure interior and service clearance.

Does the Small have a published media-basket capacity in litres?

No comparable litre value is stated for its Bio-Holster. A cartridge name, number of media pieces or 35–75 GPH flow range cannot be substituted for basket litres, so a hard minimum-media request leaves this model out.

What care interval does Aqueon give for the EcoRenew cartridge?

The linked instructions advise replacement at approximately four weeks and before the sustainable fibers begin to decompose. Keep the Bio-Holster and rinse it only in water taken from the aquarium, not tap water or cleansers.

Evidence basis: this is a document-based assessment of Aqueon’s current US SmartClean Internal family page, its linked instructions and the 2025 Aqueon catalog. No filter was installed, owned, tested or measured for this review.

The 5–15 gallon configuration has a real two-ended label

The current Aqueon selector identifies the Small QuietFlow Internal Filter with SmartClean Technology as SKU 100549862, UPC 015905002486. Both the selected page text and the 2025 catalog give a 5–15 US gallon aquarium interval. Those endpoints are useful for a strict volume screen: 5 and 15 are included, while 4.5 is below and 15.5 is above the published range. This differs materially from the adjacent Extra Small, whose “0–5G” page label conflicts with the catalog’s upper-only “up to 5” description. The numeric finder treats the Small’s clear two-ended range as an exact model label, not a stocking or waste-load recommendation.

The catalog separates package measurements (4.625 × 4.125 × 6.625 inches) from the filter item itself (4.25 × 3.5 × 6.25 inches). Use the item dimensions to plan the in-tank footprint, then leave extra room for the cover, outlet and removal for maintenance. The unit hangs inside the aquarium rather than outside the tank, so it avoids a cabinet requirement but consumes display volume and may affect the surrounding aquascape.

Adjustable flow and a model-specific cartridge

Aqueon lists a 35–75 GPH flow range for SKU 100549862 on the current family page, and the linked instruction manual identifies item 100549862 as model AQi15-BCR, Size 15, with a 35–75 GPH EcoRenew flow-rate range. Treat that as the manufacturer’s specification, not a measured installed turnover figure. Actual circulation through a tank depends on placement, water depth, obstructions and the livestock’s tolerance; the published gallons do not establish a high-bioload rating. The flow dial can be turned down for feeding or to accommodate different fish, but it cannot turn this size into the Small cartridge or range of a nearby model.

The included EcoRenew media is a Small cartridge, held in a reusable Bio-Holster. Aqueon describes the cartridge as made from sustainable fibers infused with carbon and calls it biodegradable and compostable. A NoDrip corner and the holster’s shape are intended to make replacement less messy, while the SmartClean discharge spout can direct aquarium water into a collection container during a partial water change. These features add practical steps: keep a container within reach, rotate the spout into the correct position and avoid draining more aquarium water than the manual advises.

Mounting choices are conditional on the aquarium

The product page says the filter is self-priming and includes clips for framed aquariums and suction cups for frameless aquariums. This provides two supported in-tank mounting routes, not a universal fit for every pane. Aqueon says to choose based on the thickness of the aquarium; measure and inspect the supplied pieces rather than assuming the clip and cups can be swapped at will. Both mounting arrangements avoid below-tank space, but neither proves that the aquarium has enough interior room or a convenient position for safe maintenance.

Freshwater and saltwater use are both named for this configuration. That statement does not answer species compatibility, surface agitation, fry protection, feeding flow or the filtration needs of a particular stocking plan. The Small’s range is a filter-size label, not a replacement for those decisions.

Maintenance is simple, but not disposable

Aqueon recommends changing the EcoRenew cartridge at roughly four weeks and before the sustainable fibers begin to decompose. Keep and reuse the Bio-Holster: during a cartridge change, drain excess water back into the filter and rinse the holster with aquarium water, not tap water or cleansers. The manual also shows how to remove the filter housing and clean the pump and impeller, but the instruction sheet does not publish a routine interval for those steps. If choosing this model to reduce service work, budget for recurring cartridge changes and occasional pump/impeller cleaning rather than assuming the integrated water-change spout makes it maintenance-free.

The page lists a one-year warranty, consistent with the one-year limited-warranty statement in the manual. The filter is not described as having a user-serviceable pump. Aqueon does not state a media-basket litre value for the Bio-Holster or an explicit high-waste suitability rating. Those fields remain unknown, so this model cannot satisfy a hard basket-volume or manufacturer load-validation request merely because its flow range overlaps another size.

Start with your tank and installation constraints

Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
