A useful fit for

A 15–30 gallon interval-confirmed internal option when the aquarium has room for the 5.5 × 4 × 8-inch body and either the compatible framed-tank clip or frameless-glass suction cups; it requires no below-tank canister location.

The main tradeoff

The 15-gallon endpoint overlaps the Small size, so package and interior fit matter along with volume. Its 75–150 GPH label does not establish installed circulation or high-waste suitability, and no comparable Bio-Holster litre capacity is published.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is 20 US gallons inside the Medium's manufacturer-stated range?

Yes. Aqueon's current product family page and 2025 catalog both state 15–30 US gallons for the Medium; 20 lies inside that inclusive range. It is not a fish-load rating.

Which nearby models overlap the Medium's lower endpoint?

At exactly 15 US gallons, Aqueon labels the Small 5–15 and the Medium 15–30. The closed intervals overlap at that endpoint, but the SKUs, body dimensions, EcoRenew cartridge sizes and listed flow ranges differ; confirm the exact 100549862 or 100549863 package.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is its 150-GPH top label a high-waste rating?

No. The manual and page provide a model flow label, but no explicit high-waste suitability statement or independent installed-flow measurement. An essential manufacturer load-evidence request therefore excludes this model.

Does the Medium meet a minimum media-basket volume?

The sources describe a Medium EcoRenew cartridge and Bio-Holster but do not assign comparable litre capacity to the holder. Do not convert cartridge size or the filter's physical dimensions into media litres.

Evidence basis: this is a document-based assessment of Aqueon’s current US SmartClean Internal family page, its linked instructions and the 2025 Aqueon catalog. No filter was installed, owned, tested or measured for this review.

A distinct 15–30 gallon internal model

Aqueon’s current US selector lists the Medium QuietFlow Internal Filter with SmartClean Technology as SKU 100549863, UPC 015905002493. The 2025 catalog separately identifies item 100549863 as the 15–30 gallon size with a Medium EcoRenew cartridge. Both the current page and catalog support that closed interval, so the matcher recognizes 15 and 30 as included endpoints. The Medium’s lower endpoint overlaps the Small model’s upper endpoint at exactly 15 gallons; that boundary can return both size-specific models. At 15.5, the Small is outside its stated range and the Medium remains in range. A volume match alone does not decide which outlet, footprint or cartridge arrangement suits a particular aquarium.

The catalog lists the filter item at 5.5 × 4 × 8 inches and the retail box at 5.75 × 4.625 × 8.75 inches. This is the largest of the three current SmartClean Internal bodies, so a buyer should measure space inside the tank rather than use only the carton size. Allow access to the upper cover and the discharge spout, and leave enough room to lift out the filter when cleaning the housing and impeller.

Flow and media differ from the smaller sizes

The current Aqueon page and linked manual specify 75–150 GPH for item 100549863. The manual identifies its model code as AQi30-BCR, Size 30, and names a Medium EcoRenew cartridge. These size-specific flow and refill labels distinguish it from the Small’s 35–75 GPH/Small cartridge and the Extra Small’s up-to-35 GPH/Extra Small cartridge. GPH remains a maker-listed output specification, not an independent measurement of aquarium circulation or a fish-load rating. Aqueon describes the flow as adjustable and says the filter is suitable for freshwater or saltwater aquariums; the page does not attach a high-waste claim to this model.

The cartridge sits in a Bio-Holster that Aqueon describes as a place for beneficial bacteria. The product page says the EcoRenew cartridge is made with sustainable fibers and infused with carbon, while its NoDrip design is intended to reduce spills when it is removed. A built-in SmartClean spout gives the owner a way to direct water into a container for a partial change. It still requires a reachable container, careful spout orientation and the manual’s partial-drain procedure; it does not automate replenishment or water treatment.

Check the mounting and service route

The current family page says the unit is self-priming, restarts automatically after power returns, and installs with either hanging clips for framed aquariums or suction cups for frameless glass. Aqueon notes that the choice depends on glass thickness. Confirm the aquarium structure and the exact contents of the seller’s package; a below-tank cabinet is not needed, but clear water circulation inside the display and access for removal are still essential practical checks. An internal filter can occupy valuable habitat space even when it solves a cabinet constraint.

For the cartridge, Aqueon recommends an approximately four-week replacement cadence and says to replace it before the sustainable fibers begin decomposing. The manual says to retain the Bio-Holster, let excess water drain back into the filter and rinse it in water taken from the aquarium. It specifically warns against rinsing that holster under tap water or using cleansers. Pump and impeller cleaning are described in the linked instructions, but no fixed recurring interval is stated there; do not turn the cleaning steps into a made-up calendar schedule.

A barcode collision is not a model crosswalk

There is a source discrepancy worth preserving at checkout. The official current SmartClean selector assigns SKU 100549863 and UPC 015905002493 to this Medium model, and the linked manual independently pairs item 100549863 with AQi30-BCR/Size 30. But the 2025 catalog also prints UPC 015905002493 beside a separately named Shrimp Internal item 100547610. The reviewed current selector contains only the three standard 100549861/862/863 variants and does not explain the repeated barcode. This review therefore treats the Medium identity as established by its exact SKU, size, package and manual code, but does not merge it with the shrimp package or claim the conflicting barcode is resolved. Confirm the exact SKU and “15–30G / M” package face instead of buying from UPC alone.

The catalog gives no comparable media-basket litres for this Bio-Holster. A cartridge name, the 150-GPH upper flow label or the 15–30-gallon interval cannot fill that missing measurement. Nor does the product page state an explicit high-waste suitability rating. The page and manual both give a one-year warranty, but the normal warranty should not be assumed for a used item.
