Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Which aquarium-size interval is printed for the 50–90 SmartClean HOB?
Aqueon's current page and 2025 catalog label this exact SKU 100551034 for 50–90 US gallons. The screen uses the inclusive endpoints; adjacent sizes overlap at shared endpoints. This label is not a stocking or load rating.
Explore this need in the finder →What should I check when installing the 50–90 SmartClean filter?
This is a hang-on-back unit, so a cabinet under the tank is not required, but its 12.913 × 6.929 × 9.449 inch listed body needs compatible rim and rear-wall clearance. Check the marked waterline, top-cover access, drain-spout rotation and the current hose fitting before purchase.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 50–90 model have a published GPH or high-waste rating?
No model-specific GPH, media-basket litres or high-waste suitability was found in the current product page, linked manual or targeted catalog table. Its relative 50–100% dial range is not an output measurement; an essential request for explicit high-waste guidance therefore excludes it. The page says one-year warranty while the linked manual says limited lifetime; verify the exact current terms.

The largest listed SmartClean HOB spans 50–90 gallons
Aqueon labels the largest SmartClean Power Filter 50–90. Its current family page identifies the selectable configuration as SKU 100551034 and UPC 015905002783. The product-page dimensions are 12.913 × 6.929 × 9.449 inches; the package dimensions in the 2025 catalog are 13 × 7 × 9.5 inches. The jump in size is material: compare the body against the aquarium's rim, rear wall, cover, waterline and cord route, and leave room to remove the lid and work on the cartridge. The package artwork includes a “75” graphic, but the current selector and catalog interval are 50–90; this review uses the current published interval rather than interpreting the graphic as a new capacity limit.
The 50–90 range meets the 30–50 model at 50 gallons. A strict interval screen will therefore show both at that shared endpoint and neither above 90 gallons. The range is an aquarium-volume label only. No high-waste suitability, basket litres, or model-specific GPH is published on the reviewed product page, catalog table or manual.
Flow adjustment and water-change routing
Aqueon says SmartClean flow is adjustable. The linked manual specifies a 50–100 percent adjustment, but provides no gallons-per-hour number from which to calculate actual aquarium circulation. Its spout is the family feature that changes the maintenance workflow: raise it to stop the normal flow, rotate it to drain water, and push it down to resume. The manual describes directing discharged water into a container and recommends removing about a quarter of the aquarium water, not draining the entire tank. This helps route a partial change; it does not automatically measure or replace that water.
The manual's AQ50–90 model code appears in the one-inch-ID tubing row. That model label matches the product page's 50–90 selector text, but the instruction chart does not give retail SKU 100551034 as a cross-reference. Verify the fitting and current hose arrangement rather than assuming that any aquarium tube will attach.
Maintenance and consumables are still recurring
The supplied EcoRenew cartridge combines natural fibers with activated carbon and is described by Aqueon as biodegradable and compostable. The instructions recommend replacing it after roughly four weeks, before decomposition begins, and keeping the Bio-Holster grid rather than discarding it. Rinse the grid in aquarium water, not tap water or a cleaning agent. Aqueon also calls for monthly impeller rinsing. Optional carbon, ammonia-reducer and phosphate-remover pads are separate, with a two-to-three-week replacement interval in the manual. None is a maker-published high-load certification, and the product's cartridge layout does not establish a numeric biological media volume.
Large HOB installation and conflicting warranty text
This model avoids a canister cabinet location but demands substantial rear space for its body and water-change outlet. Check the aquarium rim and waterline against the instruction diagram, ensure a cover will not block the spout, and consider how you will collect the drained water. The product page says the filter supports fresh or saltwater use and lists a one-year warranty. Its linked 2023 manual instead describes limited lifetime coverage. Those two manufacturer statements conflict; check the warranty shown for the exact current box and ask Aqueon if necessary. The manual lists 120 V, 60 Hz, but no reviewed source gives this model's electrical current draw.
Choose the 50–90 when that exact capacity label and larger HOB footprint are acceptable. This is not the right evidence base for someone who needs a numerical flow rate, published media volume or an explicit rating for a heavily stocked aquarium. The 30–50 is a distinct smaller option at the shared 50-gallon endpoint; compare its body size, hose instructions and interval rather than assuming the largest model is automatically the best choice.

Start with your tank and installation constraints
Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
