Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Which aquarium-size interval is printed for the 10–20 SmartClean HOB?
Aqueon's current page and 2025 catalog label this exact SKU 100551030 for 10–20 US gallons. The screen uses the inclusive endpoints; adjacent sizes overlap at shared endpoints. This label is not a stocking or load rating.
Explore this need in the finder →What should I check when installing the 10–20 SmartClean filter?
This is a hang-on-back unit, so a cabinet under the tank is not required, but its 6.575 × 4.331 × 7.008 inch listed body needs compatible rim and rear-wall clearance. Check the marked waterline, top-cover access, drain-spout rotation and the current hose fitting before purchase.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 10–20 model have a published GPH or high-waste rating?
No model-specific GPH, media-basket litres or high-waste suitability was found in the current product page, linked manual or targeted catalog table. Its relative 50–100% dial range is not an output measurement; an essential request for explicit high-waste guidance therefore excludes it. The page says one-year warranty while the linked manual says limited lifetime; verify the exact current terms.

The smallest published SmartClean HOB interval
The Aqueon SmartClean Power Filter 10–20 is the 10–20 US gallon configuration, SKU 100551030, UPC 015905002745. Aqueon publishes a 6.575 × 4.331 × 7.008 inch filter-body size on the current product page; its 2025 catalog separately lists the retail package as 6.75 × 4.375 × 7 inches. Measure the actual opening behind the aquarium and the rim, not just the package. The manufacturer does not give this model a GPH figure, basket-volume rating or high-waste designation, so the size label cannot substitute for those missing facts.
Its 10–20 label is an inclusive manufacturer interval in our numeric screen: at 10 and 20 gallons this size qualifies; above 20 it does not. The neighboring 20–30 overlaps at 20, so a tank exactly at that shared endpoint can show both entries. This is a capacity label, not a stocking recommendation or an assurance that a particular livestock plan is appropriate.
A water-change spout is the distinguishing feature
SmartClean is more than a conventional cartridge HOB. The page describes a three-step spout routine: raise the spout to stop normal filter flow, rotate it to drain aquarium water, then push it back down. Aqueon's manual illustrates routing that discharge through tubing to a separate container. It advises removing about one quarter of the aquarium water and not emptying the tank completely. This may make a scheduled partial water change easier to direct, but it does not measure water volume or replace conditioned refill water, gravel cleaning or a separate maintenance plan.
The manual's tubing chart groups AQ10–20 and AQ20–30 under 5/8-inch-ID tubing. Those size names correspond to the current page's two smaller intervals, but the manual does not list current retail SKUs. Check the current package and outlet before buying tubing or assuming an included hose fits. The 30–50 and 50–90 manual designations use a different, 1-inch-ID entry.
Cartridge changes still need care
The supplied EcoRenew cartridge combines natural fibers and activated carbon, and Aqueon describes the material as biodegradable and compostable. The manual recommends replacing it at about four weeks, before it starts to decompose. Its Bio-Holster grid is meant to stay in place and be rinsed in water taken from the aquarium—not under tap water and not with a cleanser. The same instructions advise monthly impeller rinsing. Replacement specialty pads for carbon, ammonia reduction or phosphate removal are separate, are listed at two-to-three-week replacement intervals, and should not be treated as proof that the filter is certified for a high-waste aquarium.
Fit checks and unresolved claims
This is a hang-on filter and requires no below-tank canister location, but it still needs an aquarium rim and rear clearance. Confirm the marked waterline, the body and spout clearance, the lid's removal path, cord routing and a GFCI-protected outlet. Aqueon says it can be used in freshwater or saltwater. Its current product page lists a one-year warranty while the linked manual describes limited lifetime coverage; those statements conflict. Verify the warranty for the exact current box rather than assuming the longer term applies.
Choose the 10–20 only when its labeled interval and the water-change spout suit the installation. Buyers wanting a documented pump output, measured flow under media, basket litres or explicit load rating will not find those answers in the reviewed sources. Compare its body footprint and smaller hose arrangement against the 20–30 size, and keep the exact 100551030 package identity in view.

Start with your tank and installation constraints
Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
