Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the QuietFlow 400 fit a 100- or 150-gallon aquarium by the documented interval?
The 2025 Aqueon catalog specifies 100–150 gallons, while the current product-page variant and 2016 instructions say up to 155. The finder uses the narrower catalog interval: 100 and 150 are inclusive boundaries, while 99.5 and 150.5 fall outside. That is a conservative evidence screen, not a stocking recommendation.
Explore this need in the finder →What return hardware is distinct on the 400?
The manual identifies a smaller hose and Y-fitting only for SKU 100107314. In the HOB polishing configuration, the 400 needs two short hoses and two polishing units; the Water Director and Spray Bar remain alternative return arrangements, not simultaneous add-ons.
Explore this need in the finder →How much canister and aquarium clearance does the 400 need?
The 2025 catalog gives body dimensions of 8.875 × 8.875 × 19.875 inches and larger retail-box dimensions of 14.375 × 14.75 × 20.5 inches. The manual also requires a gravity-fed spot no more than 4.5 feet below the tank waterline, forbids placement above the waterline and warns against twisted or sharply bent hoses.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 400's 400 GPH label document high-waste suitability?
No. It is a maker-listed flow label, not a tested aquarium-side reading or a fish-load rating. The sources provide no explicit high-waste suitability statement and no comparable media-basket volume in litres.

The largest variant has a conservative 100–150-gallon screen
Aqueon identifies the largest QuietFlow canister as model 400, US item 100107314, UPC 015905073141. The current product-page variant and 2016 instructions call it suitable for aquariums up to 155 gallons. Aqueon’s 2025 catalog is more specific and lists a 100–150-gallon interval. For numeric matching this site uses the narrower, current-catalog 100–150 range, which is contained within the product/manual ceiling. It therefore enters at 100 and remains through 150, but is not certified at 99.5 or 150.5. The sources disagree about the upper number; this review does not extend the current match to 155 merely because an older page/manual says “up to.”
The manufacturer’s size claim is not a stocking guide. It does not state an appropriate fish count, waste load, flow demand or capacity under a particular aquascape. Aqueon supports freshwater and saltwater use, but that does not make the filter suitable for every species or system. Treat 100–150 as a deliberately conservative documentary interval and evaluate livestock needs separately.
Three baskets and a model-specific twin-polisher setup
The 400 returns to a three-basket layout after the two-basket 300. The 2025 catalog lists the filter body at 8.875 × 8.875 × 19.875 inches; its much larger 14.375 × 14.75 × 20.5-inch retail package is not the body size. Allow extra height for removing the pump head and lifting the baskets, plus side access for hose connectors and the service valves. The maker does not publish basket capacity in litres, so three baskets should not be translated into a numerical media-volume claim.
The manual marks the smaller hose and Y-fitting as components for item 100107314 only. If the chosen return is the hang-on-back Water Polishing Unit, the 400 requires two shorter tubes and a Y to serve two polishing units. Aqueon’s manual parts diagram and setup instructions make that a meaningful difference from the 200 and 300, which use a single polisher in their depicted arrangement. The Water Director and Spray Bar remain alternative return methods. The product family describes foam, activated carbon, Bio-Balls, Bio-Ceramic Rings and cartridge-based final polishing, but an individual seller’s package still needs inspection.
Flow and electrical figures need context
The 400 is listed at 400 GPH and 1.32 A at 120 V / 60 Hz. The sources reviewed here do not provide an independent measurement of delivered aquarium-side flow through loaded media, the selected return, hose length and tank plumbing. The GPH number is a manufacturer label—not a tested in-tank reading or an automatic suitability score. Aqueon does not publish a high-waste or unusually-stocked-tank assessment for this exact model, so neither the 400 GPH figure nor the larger size should be used as a substitute for one.
The manual says the system must be primed and air removed before normal function. Setup differs by return arrangement. In the HOB polishing configuration, the 400’s dual-hose assembly is an additional piece of plumbing to inspect; with a Water Director or Spray Bar, the return hardware changes. Keep all tubes straight and clear of major bends, and use the actual instruction diagrams when planning the cabinet and aquarium rim.
Respect the gravity-fed placement and service rules
Aqueon says the canister cannot sit above the aquarium water level and must be no more than 4.5 feet below that waterline. The aquarium waterline should not be more than 8 inches below its frame. The manual’s later troubleshooting section also says a difference of less than six feet should prevent gasket leaks when the motor stops; that is not the same wording as the stricter setup instruction. Follow the 4.5-foot setup limit and contact the manufacturer before treating the troubleshooting value as a placement allowance.
Canister service means unplugging the unit, closing both quick-disconnect valves, separating the head, removing baskets and cleaning the impeller area or strainer as needed. The polishing cartridge is easier to reach than the main baskets but still has a timing discrepancy between the product page’s monthly replacement note and the manual’s “more than three weeks,” condition and bypass checks. That is not a reason to assume constant replacement; check the cartridge and use the maker’s latest instructions. Aqueon lists a one-year product warranty and the manual states a 12-month limited warranty, but verify terms and included paperwork for a new unit.
Who should compare the 400 closely
The 400 deserves a comparison if the 100–150-gallon conservative interval, the three-basket layout and the option of two polishing returns align with your setup. The extra polishing hardware may be useful in a tank layout that can accept both HOB units, but it adds rim and tubing details rather than eliminating maintenance. Against the 300, it adds a basket and its own twin-polisher hose arrangement; against the 200, it has a substantially taller body and higher maker-listed current draw. Those are real documented differences, not a ranking.
Before ordering, check the exact US item and UPC, that the two short hoses and Y-fitting are present if needed, both polishing units and cartridges if that return is chosen, body and service clearance, aquarium rim, hose route and outlet electrical supply. The exact model image on this page is Aqueon’s package artwork, not a photograph of a filter installed or a personal test. The purchase decision still depends on the tank’s actual operating conditions and livestock plan.
