Aquael ULTRAMAX 1500 External Canister Aquarium Filter review

Aquael's current US table identifies item 123040 with a 65–120 US-gallon range, four 1.9 L baskets and a 13.5 L total bucket; it must operate below aquarium water level.

A useful fit for

A candidate for an aquarium in Aquael's printed 65–120 US-gallon interval when a suitable external-canister position below water level is available; it has four documented 1.9 L baskets.

The main tradeoff

The 1500 is taller than the 1000 but has one additional tray and a range overlapping both adjacent models. The US page does not establish its electrical supply or current box contents, while its 395 GPH maximum is not an installed-flow or livestock-load guarantee.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

At 90 US gallons, does the ULTRAMAX 1500 have a documented interval fit?

Yes, Aquael's current US table lists 65–120 US gallons for item 123040, so 90 is within the printed range. It still requires a suitable below-waterline canister position and the range does not rate fish load.

At 70 US gallons, is the 1500 the only ULTRAMAX interval option?

No. Both the 1000's 25–80 range and 1500's 65–120 range contain 70 gallons. The 1500 adds a fourth 1.9-L basket and is 17.9 inches tall, but neither fact is a biological-load recommendation.

How should I interpret the four baskets and 13.5 L bucket figure?

Aquael lists each basket at 1.9 L and the whole bucket at 13.5 L. The bucket is not one media basket; this 1.9-L figure is below a 2.0-L minimum, and exact current included media should be verified on the offer.

The Aquael ULTRAMAX 1500 is the middle size in the maker’s current US ULTRAMAX table. The exact row names item 123040, rates the aquarium interval at 65–120 US gallons (250–450 L as printed), and lists four 1.9 L baskets, a 13.5 L bucket and a 395 GPH / 1,500 L/h maximum. The table also gives a 17.9-inch body height, 10.6 × 11.4-inch footprint, 16/22-mm hoses and 170-cm maximum head. These are Aquael’s own figures; the flow is not a measured in-tank result, and the capacity interval is not a stocking or high-waste rating.

The overlap makes size choice less obvious than the name

In the current family table, 1500 is not a hard step above 1000 at every tank size. Their intervals overlap between 65 and 80 gallons. At 70 gallons both are inside their maker-listed ranges: the smaller 1000 has three baskets, an 11 L total bucket and a 15.5-inch body; the 1500 adds a fourth 1.9 L tray, increases the total bucket figure to 13.5 L, and stands 2.4 inches taller. At the top end, the 1500 overlaps the 2000 from 105 to 120 gallons; the 2000 is taller, has five baskets and switches to 19/25-mm hoses. That means a nominal tank number does not select a unique model throughout the family’s overlap zones.

The basket comparison is particularly easy to misread. Aquael lists each tray at 1.9 L for all three sizes; 13.5 L is the 1500’s total bucket capacity, not the volume of one basket. The maker describes a separate approximately 0.6 L lid-mounted prefilter and says the total media capacity across the range includes that prefilter. Those figures do not turn the 13.5 L vessel into a single media tray or prove a larger biologically useful capacity.

Installation is a hard condition

The English manual says the ULTRAMAX must always be positioned below aquarium water level. A suitable under-aquarium space is therefore part of the documented operating plan, not just a matter of preference. Measure the cabinet’s clear height and footprint, then check hose routing and service access: the product table gives the canister body dimensions but no extra working-clearance figure. The 1500 has a 67-inch maximum-head label and 16/22-mm hose pair, but those numbers do not settle whether a real hose route, stand or room placement is suitable.

Aquael describes a self-priming piston and double valves that isolate the unit from its hoses. For flow adjustment, the manual directs the user to the OUT valve and says the IN valve should stay as open as possible; restricting the inlet can air-lock the filter and may stop it. Aquael’s 2025 change sheet also depicts new overflow pipes for ULTRAMAX 1000/1500/2000. The family page says inlet/outlet parts changed in September 2025, so the exact delivered plumbing can vary by production. Check the actual package and confirm its connectors fit the intended installation before buying.

Care is conditional, not a fixed calendar guarantee

The built-in coarse sponge prefilter is in the lid and Aquael says it can be removed and rinsed without taking the canister out of the stand. The older English manual gives a general one-to-four-week prefilter interval depending on aquarium conditions, and also says to clean when performance visibly falls. Main media should be rinsed in water drained from the aquarium, not tap water; the manual suggests first cleaning the main stack if a visible loss remains after prefilter cleaning and recommends cleaning or replacing it at least annually. That is manufacturer guidance, not a service schedule I have tested. Debris, media choice and stocking affect how often service is needed, and opening the body can spill dirty water.

Electrical edition and package details remain open

The current US model table reports 20.5 W for item 123040 but gives no line voltage or frequency. The linked manual’s general 220–240 V specification and the 2023 change chart’s 16 W value apply to a different manual/item-code context; they do not certify the current US code for a local outlet. Check the actual nameplate and box rather than inferring a 120 V / 60 Hz supply from the “US” page or a wattage number. Aquael’s current page also contains a malformed 2000 wattage string elsewhere in the family copy, so the model table and label should remain distinct from the stray prose.

The official image associated with the 1500 shows the right model name on older box artwork, but its code is 120665, not the current US item 123040. It cannot verify the current package or electrical revision. The November 2025 sprinkler notice changes the stated ULTRAMAX sprinkler set from five shorter pieces to three longer ones. Aquael’s current US text says selected media and accessories are included but does not enumerate the exact 123040 package; confirm media, fittings and sprinkler count with the seller’s actual product version.

Where the 1500 earns a comparison

Keep the 1500 in consideration when the measured aquarium volume is within 65–120 US gallons, a below-waterline canister place exists, and four 1.9 L baskets plus a 13.5 L vessel are useful in the available stand. At 70 gallons, compare it directly with the 1000 because both intervals include that value. Near 110 gallons, compare it with the 2000 because their ranges overlap there. Neither the added tray, the upper gallon label nor the maximum-flow number proves that a high-waste tank is appropriately filtered; Aquael does not state an explicit high-waste rating for this configuration in the sources checked.

Before ordering, match ULTRAMAX 1500 and item 123040, verify the electrical nameplate, check the package’s current inlet/outlet and sprinkler parts, and confirm a compliant cabinet, support and maintenance path. No owner experience, measurements, prices, availability or independent test results are claimed here.
