Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
At 50 US gallons, is the ULTRAMAX 1000 inside its exact maker range, and what does its basket figure mean?
Aquael's US table lists 25–80 US gallons and three separate 1.9 L baskets for item 123041. That 50-gallon request is within the printed interval, but the 11 L total bucket is not a per-basket value; the manual also requires below-waterline placement.
Explore this need in the finder →Would the 1000 or 1500 be the documented interval match at 70 US gallons?
Both Aquael ranges include 70 gallons: the 1000 is labeled 25–80 and the 1500 65–120. Compare basket count, height and exact package rather than treating the larger model number as automatic evidence of better biological fit.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the ULTRAMAX 1000 solve a setup with no below-waterline canister position or a required high-waste rating?
No such fit is documented here: Aquael's manual requires below-waterline placement and the checked US sources provide no explicit high-waste suitability statement. Do not infer either from its 265 GPH maximum or 80-gallon ceiling.
Explore this need in the finder →The Aquael ULTRAMAX 1000 is a separate external-canister configuration, not simply a synonym for the maker’s similarly named ULTRA FILTER line. Aquael’s current US family table identifies the 1000 as item 123041 and gives it a 25–80 US-gallon range (100–300 L as printed), 265 GPH / 1,000 L/h maximum efficiency, three 1.9 L baskets and an 11 L total bucket. Those dimensions and capacity claims are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. The US table is the useful identity anchor: older documents and package art use earlier item numbers, so check the actual item label before treating an online title or photo as the current US version.
A three-basket position in the family
This is the shortest ULTRAMAX body in Aquael’s current US comparison at 15.5 inches tall, with a 10.6 × 11.4-inch footprint. The 1500 grows to 17.9 inches and four baskets; the 2000 is 20.1 inches tall with five. All list a 1.9 L capacity for each individual basket, while the 1000’s 11 L bucket is a different whole-container measure. Aquael also describes an approximately 0.6 L coarse sponge prefilter built into the lid. That prefilter is separately accessed; it does not turn the total bucket or prefilter volume into a larger single media basket.
The 1000 overlaps the 1500 on the manufacturer ranges from 65 through 80 US gallons. At 70 gallons both are inside their printed bands, so the decision is not a numerical ranking: compare the 1000’s three trays and lower body with the 1500’s fourth tray, higher body, 395 GPH maximum and larger bucket. The 1000’s maximum is listed as 265 GPH. It is not an aquarium-side flow measurement, and the tank interval is not a fish-count or heavy-waste rating. Aquael does not publish a high-waste qualification in the reviewed US model table.
Placement and start-up are decisive
Aquael’s English manual says the filter must always sit below aquarium water level. That is stricter than a generic description of “external” and makes the 1000 a poor candidate when the stand cannot provide a compliant, stable location under the tank. The listed body height is only the filter itself: the documentation does not supply a clearance allowance for a particular cabinet, hose bend or lifting the trays, so measure the usable opening and service path rather than assuming the printed body dimensions are the complete installation envelope.
The same manual describes a self-priming piston and double valves that isolate the hoses for removal. It says to regulate output with the OUT valve and leave the IN valve as open as possible; restricting the inlet may air-lock the unit and, in extreme cases, stop it. The current US table lists 16/22 mm hoses. Aquael’s 2025 notice describes an updated overflow pipe for the ULTRAMAX 1000, while the family page warns that inlet/outlet parts changed starting in September 2025. The exact fittings therefore depend on production version; check the current box and your intended routing before committing to plumbing.
Maintenance without a promise of a fixed workload
The maker says the lid-mounted prefilter can be opened and rinsed without removing the canister from its cabinet. The older English manual suggests checking and cleaning it as flow declines, with a general interval of one to four weeks depending on aquarium conditions. For the main baskets, it directs the owner to rinse media in water removed from the aquarium, not tap water, and says initial main-media cleaning is appropriate after a visible reduction remains even after prefilter cleaning. Its recommendation is to clean or replace main media at least annually. These are manufacturer directions, not a service interval I have measured; stocking, debris and media choices will affect actual upkeep. The manual also cautions that dirty water can spill when the canister is opened, so leave room for removal and protect the work area.
Check the electrical and package version carefully
The US comparison table reports 20 W for item 123041, but does not state voltage or frequency. The linked general manual contains a 220–240 V specification for its own edition, and Aquael’s 2023 revision sheet uses older item 120664 and gives a different post-August-2023 wattage. Those sources do not establish that a current item 123041 is suitable for a 120 V / 60 Hz supply. Verify the nameplate and package before connecting it; wattage alone is not an electrical compatibility check.
There is also a package-version issue. Aquael’s November 2025 notice changes the sprinkler used with ULTRAMAX models from five shorter pieces to three longer ones, while the official product photo on the current family page uses older carton artwork and item 120664-era identification. The photograph identifies the 1000 model name but does not verify the present US item, electrical label, sprinkler count or exact media contents. Treat the box image as an archived manufacturer reference, not a current package checklist. The maker page says the package includes selected media, but the checked current US table does not enumerate an exact 123041 contents list.
Who should keep it on the shortlist?
The 1000 is a defensible comparison for someone whose measured aquarium volume falls inside 25–80 US gallons, who has the required below-waterline space, and who values three individual 1.9 L baskets in a body shorter than the 1500 and 2000. It is not a “fits every tank up to 80 gallons” guarantee: the lower bound matters, installation matters, and livestock needs remain a separate decision. If 70 gallons is the case, review the 1500 as well because the intervals overlap. If a 50-gallon system needs a 4 L basket, this model’s 1.9 L individual tray does not meet that requirement, even though the bucket total is 11 L.
Before purchase, match the exact ULTRAMAX 1000 and current US item 123041; confirm supply voltage/frequency on the product label, current inlet/outlet and sprinkler package, and the actual included media; then measure the below-waterline location, hose path and room for service. No price, availability, customer-experience or independent test result is asserted here.
