A useful fit for

A compact, adjustable internal-filter configuration for shoppers considering an in-tank unit and its 250 ml loose-media chamber; a below-tank canister space is not required. Aquael's exact size row gives only an under-30-gallon ceiling, so the library cannot certify a particular aquarium volume for this model.

The main tradeoff

The unit occupies space inside the aquarium, and its maker-listed ceiling lacks a lower bound. The page's 130 US GPH figure is not installed circulation, while the current electrical label and seller package need exact-item verification.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the US page confirm this model at 29.5 gallons?

No numeric match is established. Aquael prints only <30 US gal for the 500 and does not give a lower interval endpoint; the strict two-bound matcher therefore does not certify even a value below the ceiling. This is an evidence limit, not proof the filter cannot operate there.

Can I compare the 500 without an under-tank canister location?

Yes, the reviewed arrangement is an internal filter attached inside the aquarium, not an external canister. Leave aquarium space for the filter and service removal; the placement answer does not establish a volume or livestock-load match.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does its loose-media container meet a 0.3 L minimum?

No. Aquael specifies a 250 ml (0.25 L) container for the 500, below a 0.3 L minimum. The container's listed volume is not the total filter-body volume, and it does not document high-waste suitability.

The Aquael TURBO FILTER 500 is the smallest of four configurations in the current US TURBO family table. Aquael lists current item 115066, a 2.8 × 3 × 9.4 in body, 4.8 W, and a maximum output/“efficiency” figure of 130 US GPH (500 L/h). The US row prints capacity as “< 30 US gal / < 150 L.” That is a ceiling, not a two-ended interval: no lower tank-size endpoint is supplied, and the paired litre and gallon claims should not be recalculated into one another.

What the 500 is built to do

This is an internal filter: its pump and media assembly sit inside the aquarium rather than in a cabinet or hanging over the rim. That changes the space tradeoff. It avoids a below-tank canister position and hose route, but the body occupies aquarium interior volume and needs room to remove or service its parts. Aquael describes sponge-based mechanical filtration plus a container for biological media. Its family page says the starter set includes a sponge, a container with starter BioCeraMax Pro 600, and installation accessories. It also describes adjustable flow and aeration, with an outlet that can be directed. Those are manufacturer statements, not results from a hands-on test.

The 500’s media container is the smallest in this four-size group: Aquael specifies 250 ml of loose-media capacity for the 500, compared with 625 ml for each of the 1000, 1500 and 2000. That number describes the container volume, not the complete filter body and not the sponge. If your purchasing rule is a minimum listed chamber volume, the distinction matters: a 0.3 L minimum is above the 500’s 0.25 L value, while a lower threshold can still leave other concerns unresolved.

How to read its tank-size claim

The important limitation is not that the 500 is known to be unsuitable at any particular smaller volume. It is that Aquael’s current US row does not establish a lower endpoint. Our volume finder intentionally requires both lower and upper facts, and an unknown lower bound cannot satisfy that essential condition. It therefore does not certify a 5-, 10- or 29.5-gallon tank for this model even though each is below the printed ceiling. At exactly 30 gallons the “less than 30” notation is also exclusive. That conservative matching result is an evidence boundary, not a claim that the filter cannot run in a smaller tank.

A gallon label is not a fish-count rating. Aquael does not provide an explicit high-waste or stocking-density statement for this configuration, so the 130 US GPH maximum figure should not be used to infer capacity for heavy feeding, messy livestock or a particular water-quality target. Installed flow can depend on the exact setup and media, and this assessment does not claim a measured flow rate.

Care and setup checks

Aquael’s linked TURBOFILTER manual describes the shared filter family’s flow and aeration adjustments, directs the user to follow the voltage printed on the device, and instructs that the unit be unplugged before cleaning. It says to rinse the sponge in water drained from the aquarium and to clean the impeller chamber at least monthly; it also recommends replacing about half of the BioCeraMax Pro 600 filling every six months. Treat those as the manual’s maintenance guidance, not a schedule established by our own use. The current US product table gives wattage but does not establish the item-115066 voltage and frequency. Check the label and instructions supplied with the exact unit.

Where it differs from the larger sizes

The 1000 starts at 30 gallons and lists a 625 ml loose-media container, 15 W and a 265 US GPH figure; the 1500 and 2000 list larger gallon ranges and higher output labels while retaining that same 625 ml container. The 500 is not a miniature canister and should not be compared with external models solely by their maximum flow. It remains an in-tank device with a smaller media chamber and an upper-only US capacity claim. The US family page’s current item number, 115066, differs from 109401 in the filename of its linked manual and size-specific gallery art. Aquael does not state a code crosswalk. The image is model-size-associated manufacturer art, not proof of a seller’s current box or electrical revision.

Before considering an offer

Confirm that the listing says TURBO FILTER 500 and current item 115066, rather than relying on a similar photograph or an old code alone. Verify the current nameplate voltage/frequency, included sponge and media container, the space required inside the tank, and whether the included starter media matches the seller’s box. Additional media containers are described as separately available; they are not assumed here to be part of the standard package. If a numeric tank range or an explicit high-waste rating is essential, this library has not established it for the 500. Review the exact instructions and aquarium’s livestock plan before treating any nominal capacity or maximum output as a fit recommendation.

Start with your tank and installation constraints

Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
