Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
At 390 US gallons, does the HYPERMAX 4500 BT fall inside Aquael's US-listed capacity interval?
Yes. The current US page pairs 200 L / 52.83 US gal with 1500 L / 396.25 US gal, so 390 is inside the printed US-gallon endpoints. The maker range is not a stocking or high-waste rating, and the canister must sit below aquarium water level.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its 15.9 L media figure mean any one basket holds 15.9 L?
No. Aquael's information file lists four 3.6 L baskets, or 14.4 L combined, plus a separate 1.5 L prefilter. A 4 L minimum for each main basket is not met; the US page's gallon conversions for the total are inconsistent and are not used.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the app change this filter's flow without a Wi-Fi gateway?
Aquael documents Bluetooth control through the Aquael BT app for flow modes and schedules; it separately says a Wi-Fi Gateway BT is needed for control from anywhere over Wi-Fi. Check the offer for the correct motor power supply and do not treat Bluetooth as internet access.
Explore this need in the finder →The Aquael HYPERMAX 4500 BT is the current US-listed app-connected member of Aquael's large external-canister family. The US page calls it the latest version, and its linked information file identifies item 132256. Aquael prints a 200–1500 L / 52.83–396.25 US-gallon aquarium interval and a maximum pump-flow label of 4,500 L/h. These are manufacturer ratings, not a flow test, stocking limit or guarantee against dead spots.
Tank range and the media numbers need separate reading
The wide stated range remains a size label, not a fish-count or waste-production recommendation. It also does not promise that the maximum flow will be delivered after media, hose length, bends, head and aquarium plumbing are accounted for.
The information file lists four main baskets at 3.6 L each (14.4 L total), plus a separate 1.5 L prefilter in the lid. Aquael describes 15.9 L total filtration capacity. The US page attaches inconsistent gallon equivalents—12.94 and 42.00 US gal—to that breakdown; neither agrees with the stated liters. Compare the capacities in liters and do not treat them as one tray or a biological-load rating.
Bluetooth is useful, but it is not the same as Wi-Fi
The BT model's meaningful distinction is its Aquael BT app. The official page lists constant, pulse, sine and intermittent modes, a day/night schedule, a feeding function that reduces water movement, fault notifications, a PIN lock and a performance graph. The lid also has a control panel, and Aquael says flow adjustment is available in ten steps. These are manufacturer-described controls, not evidence that a chosen pattern will suit every fish or that the graph is a calibrated aquarium-side flow meter.
Aquael describes the app connection as Bluetooth. The page separately says a Wi-Fi Gateway BT is needed to control equipment from anywhere over Wi-Fi. Do not infer internet access from the BT suffix, assume that the gateway is in the filter box, or buy this model for a remote-control requirement without confirming the required device, app compatibility and connection arrangement. The actual power unit also deserves a label check: Aquael describes a 24 V operating voltage for the filter, while its manual directs the user to power it only through the included supply and to match the mains supply to that supply's rating label. The public page does not establish the input rating of a particular US retail unit.
Plan the cabinet, four hose runs and plumbing revision
This canister must sit below aquarium water level. The manual limits the vertical distance from filter valves to aquarium surface to 150 cm; this installation condition is distinct from the information file's 2 m maximum-head figure. Aquael lists a 21.85-inch height, a roughly 14.17-inch square footprint and four 1.5 m hoses at 19/25 mm (two IN and two OUT). Measure cabinet opening, hose routes and service clearance; the published body size does not include the space needed to open the lid or handle wet trays.
The manual recommends short hose runs without long hanging U-shapes. Keep the IN and OUT valves as open as possible during normal use and adjust flow at the panel or app rather than throttling plumbing. Startup uses assisted priming and automatic venting. Service access matters too: the removed prefilter basket is not leakproof, so a catch basin is prudent when opening the lid.
Package and maintenance claims are version-sensitive
The current US page lists 10, 20 and 30 PPI sponge elements and says two of the four main baskets are empty for the keeper to configure. Its product page also notes that inlet/outlet pieces changed in September 2025 and rain showers changed in November 2025. An official product-page image is tied to item 132256, but a picture cannot establish which production revision a retailer will ship. Check the actual model number, power-supply label, included media, connectors and spray-bar arrangement in the specific offer.
Aquael advises cleaning the lid prefilter when performance declines and at least about every four weeks depending on conditions. Rinse main media in drained aquarium water rather than tap water; the manual recommends cleaning or replacing inner cartridges at least yearly. These are maker guidelines, not tested intervals. Debris, feeding and media choices change workload, and no high-waste or stocking-density certification is published.
Who should shortlist it—and what to confirm first
The HYPERMAX 4500 BT makes sense to compare when a large aquarium falls inside Aquael's stated US interval, an appropriate below-waterline stand is available, four large media trays are useful, and smartphone-based flow scheduling is a real feature rather than a novelty. The multi-inlet/outlet arrangement may give an installer more placement choices, but it does not guarantee even circulation without sensible return positioning.
It is a poor fit for a tank without below-waterline space, for anyone who needs a confirmed high-waste rating, or for someone who needs Wi-Fi control but has not confirmed the separate gateway. Before purchase, verify item 132256, the exact power-supply input, current plumbing/sprinkler revision, the supplied media, and the cabinet's height, footprint, hose and service clearance. The US page does not establish a UPC, price, stock status or the exact contents of a retailer's box. This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on test.

Start with your tank and installation constraints
Compare supported tank-volume intervals, external versus internal arrangements, installation space and media needs. An upper-only capacity claim cannot establish a complete volume fit, and the finder cannot infer your fish load.
