Build a shortlist, not a promise

Find a filter for your tank and installation

Tell us the aquarium’s approximate US-gallon volume, which filter arrangement you can install, and where it can go. Leave a choice open if it is not essential.

How to use the filter finder

Compare manufacturer volume ranges against actual tank water volume, filter arrangement and whether an external canister can be placed below the aquarium. Add a media-basket threshold only if it is essential. An available canister location does not exclude internal or hang-on models; “no suitable space” excludes plans that require it.

Exact rim thickness, rear-wall clearance and waterline limits are discussed in the AC reviews rather than screened by this short questionnaire. High stocking or waste output still needs livestock-specific advice: no reviewed model has a verified manufacturer high-bioload rating.

Your everyday needs

Start with where and how you will use it. Choose the features you need, and leave a choice open when it is not essential.

Use US gallons of aquarium water. If you only know litres, measure or convert independently before comparing manufacturer labels; paired gallon/litre labels may not be direct conversions.

An internal unit sits in the aquarium and avoids a below-tank canister position, but it still needs clear space inside the tank.

“Yes” means a compliant below-tank spot exists; hang-on and internal models may still fit without using it. “No” excludes plans that require below-aquarium space. Check any hang-on model’s separate rim and rear-wall limits.
